As farmers gear up for their busy season they get their trusty farm equipment out and get to work. Some may have to make the major investment of purchasing a new piece of equipment to help with the daily production. These investments don’t come lightly and are extremely valuable to the lifeline of any farm. Having something of such value ripped out from under you is indescribable. Knowing that preventing it with a simple locking device that’s a fraction of the cost, can hurt even worse sometimes.
Farm theft is a “sector of crime that costs farmers nationally tens of millions of dollars — and that doesn’t count collateral losses due to not being able to properly tend a crop because of stolen equipment. The National Equipment Register, a database of construction and farm equipment thefts, lists 121,238 thefts in 2016, its most recent report. That’s up from 82,350 in 2006. Of the thefts reported in 2016, 14 percent were tractors, with mowers representing 41 percent. Miscellaneous farm equipment was lumped into the “all other” category, which totaled 9 percent of all thefts. And equipment thieves also have brand preferences.
